Air Fryer vs Oven

An air fryer is essentially a small, powerful convection oven. For most everyday meals it's faster, cheaper to run and crispier - but a full-size oven still wins on capacity and delicate baking. Here's how they compare, and when to reach for each.

~20% faster

than a conventional oven, at a lower temperature.

2-3 min preheat

vs 10-15 minutes to bring an oven up to temp.

At a glance

FactorWinnerWhy
Heat-up time Air fryer 2-3 minutes vs 10-15 for an oven
Cooking time Air fryer Roughly 20% faster than a conventional oven
Energy use Air fryer Smaller cavity heats less air - cheaper per cook
Crispiness Air fryer Strong airflow crisps better at the same temp
Capacity Oven Cooks large batches and full trays
Even baking (cakes) Oven Gentler, more even heat for delicate bakes

Speed and cooking time

Because an air fryer preheats in 2-3 minutes and circulates air aggressively, it typically cooks about 20% faster than a conventional oven and needs a temperature around 25°F (15°C) lower. Use our conversion calculator to translate any oven recipe.

Energy use and running cost

An air fryer heats a much smaller space, so for one or two portions it usually uses less energy than firing up a full oven. For large batches the oven can be more efficient per serving, since you cook far more food at once.

Is an air fryer healthier?

Air frying uses little or no added oil compared with deep frying, which lowers fat content. As with any high-heat cooking, very high temperatures can form compounds such as acrylamide in starchy foods - cooking to a golden (not dark brown) colour helps keep this down, in an air fryer or an oven.

When to use each

  • Air fryer: weeknight portions, frozen foods, reheating, anything you want crispy.
  • Oven: large roasts, full trays, multiple dishes at once, cakes and delicate bakes.
