The fan spins, the display lights up, and twenty minutes later the food is cold. Nine times out of ten this is a safety switch doing its job, not a fault - and it costs nothing to check.

Short answer

Close the drawer properly

An air fryer that runs but does not heat is nearly always a drawer that is not fully seated. A safety interlock cuts power to the element unless the drawer is home, so the fan spins, the display lights and the timer counts down with no heat at all. Pull the drawer out, clear anything jamming it, push it back until it clicks.

Check the drawer before anything else

This is not the boring first suggestion before the real ones. On a basket air fryer it genuinely is the answer most of the time, and it is worth doing properly before you spend an evening reading about thermal fuses.

  1. Pull the drawer all the way out - right out, not just ajar.
  2. Lift the basket out of the drawer and look at both. A single chip wedged under the basket, or a crumb sitting in the runner, is enough to hold the drawer a couple of millimetres short. That is all it takes.
  3. Check the basket is properly seated in the drawer. If the crisper plate or the basket is sitting proud, the drawer cannot close on it. A basket that has been warped by a dishwasher cycle will do this permanently.
  4. Push it firmly home until it clicks or seats. Then start the machine and listen: within a minute or so you should hear the element cycling and smell the air changing.

Why that switch exists, and why the symptom is so confusing

The reason this fault is so misleading is that the fan and the element are on separate circuits. The interlock only cuts the element.

So every signal you use to tell whether the machine is working still fires. The display lights. The timer counts. The fan roars away exactly as loudly as it does on a normal cook. Everything says "on" - and there is simply no heat, because the one circuit you cannot see or hear is the one that has been cut. Twenty minutes later you have cold food and a machine that appears to be functioning perfectly.

It is designed that way for an obvious reason: an exposed heating element running at 400°F with an open drawer in a kitchen with children in it is not something a manufacturer will ship. The interlock is the part doing its job. It is not a fault, and there is nothing to repair.

The rest of the checklist, in order

If the drawer is definitely seated and it still will not heat, work down this list. It runs cheapest and likeliest first.

  • Did you actually set a temperature, and press start? Plenty of machines need the temperature and the time and a start press, and some default to a low "keep warm" mode that looks like a normal running state. Worth ruling out and mildly embarrassing to discover later.
  • Check the socket with something else. Plug a kettle or a lamp into the same outlet. A tripped breaker or a dead socket is a two-minute test and a free fix.
  • Take it off the extension lead. An air fryer pulls 1,400-1,800 W. A light-gauge extension or a shared power strip will sag under that, and a machine that is being under-supplied can run its electronics happily while the element never gets what it needs. Plug it straight into the wall and try again.
  • Let it cool for half an hour. Air fryers have a thermal cut-out that kills the element if the machine overheats - typically because the rear vents were blocked or it has been running back-to-back for hours. Many reset themselves once cool. If it heats again after a rest, that was it, and the fix is to give it clear air.
  • Give it clearance. Four to five inches behind and above, nothing on top, not tucked under a wall cupboard. The machine exhausts hot air out the back; if that air has nowhere to go it gets pulled straight back in, and the machine cooks itself instead of your food.

Heating, but weakly

A different complaint with different causes: the machine clearly gets hot, but nothing browns and everything takes half as long again as it used to.

Check this first, genuinely

Is the machine in °F when you think it is in °C? Dial in 180 expecting 180°C and what you have actually asked for is 180°F - about 82°C. That is barely above a warming drawer. It will never crisp anything, and it looks exactly like a dying element. Most machines toggle the units with a long press; ours are explained in the temperatures guide.

After that, it is almost always airflow rather than heat:

  • A clogged crisper plate. Baked-on grease closes the perforations, and those perforations are the entire mechanism. A proper clean restores more performance than people expect.
  • Blocked rear vents. As above - pull it off the wall.
  • An overloaded basket. Food piled up steams in its own moisture rather than crisping, and it reads as a machine that has lost its power. It has not; it has lost its airflow.
  • No preheat. Worth 2-3 minutes and a noticeable amount of colour - see how long to preheat an air fryer.

When it is genuinely dead

If the drawer is seated, the socket is live, it is off the extension lead, it has had time to cool, and it still produces no heat at all - then something inside has failed. Realistically that is the heating element, the thermal fuse, or the control board.

Do not open it

Everything left on that list is a mains-voltage component in a sealed housing, sitting next to a capacitor and an element that runs at several hundred degrees. This is not a home repair, whatever a video tells you. If it is in warranty, claim it - a heating failure is about as clear-cut a warranty case as exists. If it is out of warranty, a repair will usually cost more than the machine did.

One genuine consolation: it is a cheap failure to have. If you are replacing it, it is worth ten minutes to work out what size you actually needed rather than buying the same thing again - most people find they bought too small.

Why is my air fryer taking longer to cook than it used to?

Usually airflow, not power. Check that the vents at the back are not against a wall or under a cupboard - the machine needs clear space to exhaust, and a blocked vent recirculates its own hot air. Then check the crisper plate is not clogged with baked-on grease, which closes the perforations that the whole design depends on. An overloaded basket does the same thing from the inside.
